BETZEN BEGINNINGS IN GERMANY
The information available on the Betzen family dates back to 1642. This is Mathias Betzen, born in 1642, in Freilingen, Germany, whose occupation was farming. We know that he had a son Peter Betzen who was also born in Freilingen in about the year 1690.
Peter was also a farmer. Peter had a son Gerhard born about 1719 in Freilingen. Gerhard followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, doing farming. Gerhard was married to Magdalena Schoelen. To our knowledge there were seven children born to them. These children were as follows:
Margaretha born 4-28-1746
Eva born 8-5-1748
Mathias born 2-27-1750
Anna born 11-7-1752
Gerhard born 1754
Susanna born 7-15-1755
Peter born 8-23-1758
Of these seven children we have some information on the two sons, Gerhard and Peter. Gerhard had nine children; Paul, Mathias, Joseph, Peter, Johann Jacob, Anna Katherina, Anna Marie, Gerhard and Johann. Information is available on his sons, Gerhard and Johann. Peter was married to Margaretha Zahlen. There were eight known children; Magdalena, Katherina, Nikolaus, Peter, Philipp, Peter, Johann and Wilhelm. No information is available on Magdalena. Nikolaus and Katherina , were not married. The descendants of Peter, Peter, Philipp, Johann and Wilhelm are listed.
Wilhelm who was born November 13, 1805 in Niedersteden, Germany was married to Susanna, Stirn. There were two children born to them. This was Barbara and Peter. Shortly after the birth of these children, Susanna died. Wilhelm, then, married Anna Marie Dümmer on January 14, 1836. Anna Marie was born. June,1815 in Nattenheim. There were nine children born of this union.
These children were, Katherina” Elizabeth” Elizabeth, Katharina, all unmarried, Magdalena who married Wilhelm Clemens, Johann
Baptist married to Margareta Weber married to Elizabeth Stalpes, Peter married to Elizabeth Eck and Barthol who married Angela Mohr.
All of these children staved in Germany except John, Peter, and Barthol.
